Our Pre-K classroom is full of big thinkers, bold questions, and hands-on discovery. Your child’s last year at JCYS Wicker Park goes deeper, following children’s ideas through long-term explorations, weaving academics into everyday life, and grounding it all in Jewish values and community. It’s a year of growth, connection, and genuine excitement about learning.
Our curriculum is rooted in the Reggio Emilia philosophy, which begins with a simple but powerful belief: every child is capable, competent, and full of ideas worth exploring. We honor the many ways children think and express themselves, from building and drawing to storytelling, movement, and conversation. Our environment is designed intentionally, with materials and spaces that invite curiosity, spark questions, and give children room to go deep. Here, the classroom itself is a teacher.
Our curriculum grows from the children in the room. Teachers observe what children are drawn to, what questions they’re asking, and what ideas they keep returning to, and build long-term projects from there. These explorations unfold over days and weeks, weaving literacy, math, science, and creative thinking naturally into the work. Academics aren’t a separate activity; they’re part of everything.
Jewish values aren’t a separate part of our day. They’re the framework for it. Children experience kindness, gratitude, and responsibility through everyday moments and the rhythm of the Jewish calendar. Every Friday, the class gathers for Community Shabbat and makes fresh challah together. Every Monday morning begins with Havdalah, marking the close of Shabbat and the start of a new week. And throughout the year, children connect with the wider Wicker Park neighborhood, building a sense of community that extends beyond the classroom. These rituals and relationships give children a sense of belonging, continuity, and pride in who they are.
Pre-K children have weekly sessions with our Music Specialist, Miss Kaylee, and bi-weekly tumbling classes with George’s Gym.
Lil’ Kickers soccer enrichment is available seasonally for an additional fee.
Children leave our Pre-K program with a strong foundation across literacy, math, and the thinking skills that make learning stick. But they also leave with something harder to measure: a sense of wonder, a love of their Jewish identity, and the confidence to show up fully wherever they go next.
