Jon Vegosen Champ Camp
About Champ Camp

Jon Vegosen Champ Camp is an afternoon summer camp focuses on health and fitness, with traditional summer camp experiences.  Each week campers enjoy:

      • USTA Ten and under tennis instruction;
      • daily Red Cross Learn-to-Swim instruction and free swim;
      • healthy hands-on cooking lessons with curriculum provided by local nonprofit Nurture;
      • group sports, arts and crafts, drama and theater; and
      • weekly all-camp activities designed to optimize camp spirit, camaraderie and teamwork!

Held at the Lillian L. Lutz Recreation Center, Champ Camp utilizes the facility’s two Max Davidson tennis courts, multi-purpose sports court, and state-of-the-art pool with a deep end, water slide, pool basketball and two shallow ends – one of which is only two feet deep, perfect for beginning swimmers.

Champ Camp scholarships are partially funded by JCYS Director for Life Jon Vegosen.  An avid tennis player, Mr. Vegosen is Chairman of the Board and President of the United States Tennis Association, Chairman of the US Open, and serves on numerous tennis associations throughout the globe.  It was his love of tennis that inspired him to support Champ Camp.

Our Staff

Over 30 employees make up our Champ Camp staff of tennis instructors, swim instructors and camp counselors.

Micky Baer Director of the Jon Vegosen Champ Camp and the Lillian L. Lutz Recreation Center  |  (847) 432-6355
Micky’s enthusiasm and happy spirit make her a perfect match for Champ Camp and The Lil’.  Her JCYS career began in the late 80s when Micky worked as a Sunflower Camp counselor and she has worn many JCYS hats since then, including North Shore Day Camp and Lutz After School Club Director from 1998-2006.  In the cold, winter months, Micky keeps warm at the George W. Lutz Family Center as the Assistant Director of North Shore Operations.

Tennis Instructors
Within age and skill leveled groups, Champ Camp uses Ten and Under Tennis, the United States Tennis Association’s preferred method of tennis curriculum.  Aided by appropriately sized rackets, four different types of tennis balls, a reduced court size and a shorter net, Champ Camp participants develop a foundation for the sport in an approachable and less intimidating way.

Camp Counselors
Champ Camp counselors are the best of the best! Chosen for their kind hearts, good judgment, spirited energy and nurturing temperament, each counselor is just the type of role model you would want your child to emulate. Lucky for us, we have a staff that returns year after year to make sure every camper has the best summer ever.

Swim Instructors
Led by Aquatics Director, Geoffrey Schott, our American Red Cross certified swim instructors are hand-selected for their excellent aquatic skills and a genuine love of kids. Our teachers adapt to each child’s unique learning style and take great joy in watching their swimmers progress. They understand that kids learn the most when they’re having fun!

Nurture Nutrition Staff
Champ Camp has partnered with Nurture, a local nonprofit organization on the North Shore that addresses hunger, and childhood obesity and wellness.   Through hands-on cooking lessons, campers build a strong foundation of healthy habits and a love of nutrition, and are equipped with the tools and resources needed to prepare healthy and delicious meals at home!
