Clinical Staff (Year Round)
Camp STAR maintains a minimum 1:3 (staff to child) ratio during the program, though most times this ratio is closer to 1:2. The director and assistant director are on site each day.
Counselors at Camp STAR are advanced undergraduates, recent college graduates, and graduate students. Staff members work at Camp STAR as part of their career path in fields like behavioral health or special education. These are not typical camp counselors – we recruit nationwide and the application process to work at Camp STAR is competitive. The counselors we hire have strong academic backgrounds and previous experience working with children.
Each summer, Camp STAR staff receive intensive training in behavioral and psychosocial treatments prior to the start of camp. With over 80 hours of training, our counselors are qualified to work in a paraprofessional capacity at the program. By contrast, the typical paraprofessional in an Illinois public school is not required to receive any specialized training before being placed in the classroom.
Our counselors are not only highly trained – they are also extremely dedicated. Outside of hours spent working directly with campers (9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.), staff teams meet at the end of each program day to review every child’s progress and make any necessary modifications to treatment plans. Counselors also receive daily supervision from the clinical director and senior clinical team.
