TEAMcorps for CPS Teens
(formerly Adventure Education)

This program for high school freshman is currently offered at three Chicago Public High Schools:

  • Hyde Park Academy
  • Sullivan
  • Mather

JCYS TEAMcorps employs the principles of experiential and adventure education to engage students in their own learning and creating an environment where participants challenge themselves and expand their comfort zones to learn and grow - as people and as students.

Our goal is to help all students develop positive academic and life skills through participation in activities that promote and encourage teamwork, leadership, communication, personal responsibility and problem solving.

The program culminates with a two-day overnight trip to JCYS Camp Henry Horner for further challenge and growth experiences at the High Sierra Adventure Center's high and low ropes course.

Parents can contact Elysabeth Ashe at lashe@jcys.org or call 773-281-2533 for more information.

Classroom Activities
JCYS TEAMcorps employs the principles of experiential and adventure education to aid 9th grade students in their transition to high school.

  • Teamwork and Leadership Development
  • Communication and Active Listening
  • Personal Responsibility/Accountability
  • Problem Solving
  • Perseverance and Goal Setting

  • Self-Confidence

Trained facilitators from JCYS TEAMcorps work with classroom teachers to apply the lessons of TEAMcorps to the daily classroom curriculum

Positive Results: TEAMcorps has helped students to:

  • Improve academic performance
  • Show respect for classmates and teachers
  • Work well with other classmates
  • Demonstrate leadership skills
  • Improve attendance rates and level of participation
  • Focus on academic and future success
  • Demonstrate improved self-efficacy and self-confidence
  • Successfully complete their freshman year of high school

Low Ropes Teambuilding Day Trip
During the first weeks of the session students will participate in a day trip to a local adventure center for a teambuilding day on the low ropes challenge course. This field trip serves to bring students together in problem solving and communication, allowing for more impact in future programming in the classroom.

Overnight Trip to CHH
After ten weeks of in-class sessions, students participate in a two-day overnight trip to JCYS Camp Henry Horner for further challenge and growth experiences at the High Sierra Adventure Center's high and low ropes course.
