JCYS is proud to honor the legacy of Past President Ken Solomon, the leadership of his son and fellow Past President David Solomon, and the commitment and generosity of the Solomon family at the JCYS 2016 Gala.
Ken & Ellen Solomon
Kenneth Solomon joined the Young Men’s Jewish Council Board of Directors in 1972. After serving on the Executive Committee as Fundraising Chairman, Endowment Liaison and Vice President, Ken became President of the Board in 1980. He and his wife Ellen were responsible for the development and expansion of the JCYS North Shore Day Camp Program which remains a vital part of the agency’s summer programs to this day. Professionally, Ken worked as a CPA and Attorney in Chicago. In 1988, Ken was selected as YMJC “Leader of the Year” for his commitment to the agency. In Ken’s message in the 1981 Annual Report, he summarized his leadership experience as, “a rewarding, enriching and fulfilling experience.” We remember and honor Ken for his unparalleled commitment to Young Men’s Jewish Council and recognize Ellen for being a constant source of support for the agency and all of the Solomon family members who have participated in its growth and success through the last 40 years.
David Solomon embodies this year’s Gala theme, “Growing up JCYS”. As a camper at Northshore Day Camp in Morton Grove in the 1970’s, David and his brothers watched as his parents dedicated their time and resources to Young Men’s Jewish Council. After receiving a bachelor of business administration degree from the University of Michigan and law degree from DePaul University, David followed in his father’s footsteps and joined the Jewish Council for Youth Services Board in 1995. David continued to grow as a leader with JCYS by serving as Chair of the Annual Dinner in 1998, Chair of the Personnel Committee and Assistant Secretary of the agency in 1999. In 2000, David served as Vice President of Fundraising and in 2002, he became President of JCYS. Professionally, David is a Partner with Levenfeld Pearlstein, LLC where he serves as the Chair of the firm’s Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) practice and also serves as outside general counsel for various middle-market companies headquartered in Chicago and operating throughout the world. David, his wife Tanya, their son Matthew and their daughter Mollie, who were campers at JCYS Sunflower Day Camp, continue to serve JCYS and are also involved as leaders in other charitable and philanthropic endeavors making a difference in their local community.
